Have a look at the SQL descriptor area. This structure lets you retrieve
information about tables, cursors, prepared SQL-statements . . . In
addition you can pass pointers instead of host variables into the SQLDA
and then use the descriptor name instead a list of variables in an OPEN,
FETCH or EXECUTE statement.

A lot of bit twiddling work to do
