Hi Vini,

Try data structures:

     d            ds
     d charfld                        5a
     d packedfld                      9p 0

     c                   eval      packedfld=*zero
     c                   eval      charfld = %subst(dbfield:1:5)

       * at this point, packedfld contains the value you're interested in.

You'll probably want to make this example more generic, but it should give
you the general idea. It can also be used for binary fields, etc.
