Mark, there's a feature of ILE RPG that will enable you to get exactly
the results you what you want with the following program (assuming
your bad field is called "NUM"):

H FIXNBR(*INPUTPACKED)
FFILE UP E DISK
IREC 01
OREC D 01
O NUM

When you code FIXNBR(*INPUTPACKED), the ILE RPG compiler will assign a
value of 0 to the internal field if it encounters invalid decimal data
in an I spec for a packed field. I privately think this is a horrible
feature since it is so easy to misuse; programmers can get an instant
"fix" for decimal data errors that is more of a cover-up than a fix.

You could also use CPYF if you define a temp file with the problem
field as zoned instead of packed, but otherwise identical fields. Copy
your file to the temp file with FMTOPT(*MAP) and then copy it back.
