A minor point but while OS/400 does come standard with several thousand
code page to code page conversions, that is not quite the same as "any"
to "any". You may find, for instance, iconv not liking Greek (423) to
Vietnamese (1130). You could do such a conversion using iconv with
Unicode as an intermediate step (423 to 13488 to 1130) but that does
mean an extra step (and lots of potential for data loss if there really
are Greek characters in the original data stream as you don't find too
many Greek characters in the Vietnamese code page).

For sure using an API like iconv or CDRCVRT is more flexible than using
some of the older table conversion approaches.
