Paul,

You brought up a point that was glossed over in earlier posts.

Writing and providing shareware or at cost modules.  It was correctly noted 
that if
you are an employee of a company and use company resources, anything you write
belongs to the company.

But back when the Earth's crust was still cooling, that did not stop Para 
Research,
which if memory serves me is primarily a publishing company, from putting their 
home
grown applications on the market and turning their data center into a profit 
center.

Anybody out there have a constrained IS budget and a creative staff?  Maybe you
could convince the "suits" that some appropriately priced service programs could
finance some internal enhancements.

How about this one....hire a trainee and have them work for a year on some 
service
programs and put them out on the market.  Let's see 500,000 AS/400 where 2% 
purchase
and pay $100 each. Now that's $1,000,000 revenue.  For that return hire two <g>
