If the value of the field is Null, set on the indicator, else set it off.
Then chain and it will work for all records. Its a pain, you must test each
Null capable field for null and set the Null Ind. accordingly.

Subject: Null fields as part of a key

Hi all,

I'm still having fun with null fields.

This time it is with regard to null keyed fields,
The problem I am having is this...

i.e 4 keys of 2A (these records exist in the database)
RCD1            RCD2            RCD3
key1=AA key1=AA key1=AA
key2=BB key2=BB key2=BB
key3=null       key3=CC key3=EE
key4=DD           key4=DD       key4=DD

I need to know if these records exist,
If I do a normal chain, it doesn`t register the existence of RCD1,
therefore it tries to write a dup record
If I specify an indicator, and turn it on, in the Klist (as per the
manual) it doesnt register the existence of RCD2 or RCD3.
note..turning the indicator off seems to have the same result as no
indicator.

How is it possible to chain a file and have the chain fail with a
matching key which contains a null value?

This is very puzzling so your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again in advance

Colin Thorpe
