  • Subject: Re: Decimal Data error - most common cause ?

Hi Chuck,

In my experience, each programmer has a different "most
common cause" for Decimal Data Errors... So, if you want an honest
answer, I can't say that there is any ONE cause thats the most
common.

However, there are about 5 or 6 reasons, for DD errors which I
generally look for when fixing programs that crash with a decimal
data error. they are:

1) Parameters being passed from one program to another with different
     data types.
2) Data structures not being initialized correctly.
3) Invalid data being moved to a numeric variable.
4) A program that doesnt use the external definition of a file.
writing a record without properly/fully defining the output
specs for the file. (In our shop, usually a S/36 program)
5) Occasionally (but rarely) a program is accessing the file with
LVLCHK(*NO), and proper care was not used.

I would assume that a bug in a trigger program could also cause
this problem, but I haven't actually encountered this happening,
yet. (Usually because we don't have beginner programmers writing
triggers)

Hope that helps...
