Jerry,
        I think when you do learn another language you'll realize
that its a very rewarding experience.  It'll even make you a better
programmer in the languages that you've been using for years!

I'm not sure why going from RPG to Java would be easier than going
from RPG to C.  In fact, I suspect that the opposite would be true!
The language syntax that Java uses is nearly identical to C -- but
Java is object oriented, which makes it it much larger jump.

Of course, the nice thing about Java is not needing to deal with all
of the pointers and memory allocations...  It pretty much handles
all of that for you.  But, RPG is capable of doing pointers and
memory management just like C is, so you might already be familiar
with it.  (but, since its pretty new in RPG, it appears that most
people aren't using it yet, except for parameters)
