The machine is under warranty and I don't want to void that. And opening
the machine isn't easy (what apple product is?).


Actually, changing out the SSD in a MBA or MBP really isn't hard at all --
provided you have the proper screwdrivers. And when you but a replacement
SSD, they will normally include them. And a small USB3 enclosure so your
old drive becomes an external drive smaller than a typical external drive.

I've upgraded a MBA before, and just ordered a 960GB drive to upgrade my
rMBP because of lack of room (partly due to VMs, like you).



The flash drive is a temporary solution until I can sell the MBA and get a
MBP.
