I would say that the risk of either is pretty low ... and a local USB drive is a whole lot faster than any cloud based service.

That said ... I do backup critical data to a remote service on a daily basis. So, if my house burns down, I can still access all my financial information from another copy of Quicken.

I also backup some important stuff to a portable USB hard drive and put it in my safe deposit box.

FWIW: I have a friend who rsync's the mailing list archives on a daily basis ... so the list data is safe and sound.
