Know anyone with a BlackBerry? All messages pass through RIM's servers which, IIRC, aren't even in the US (they're in Canada). This may have changed since I last heard about it, of course.

Sure, for most the BB is a supplemental client v. Outlook, Notes, etc. but the dependency on the service provider and corresponding assumed trust still applies.

That's just one reason I'm nursing my Treo along until a better alternative comes out. At least it talks directly to our corporate Exchange environment using ActiveSync (webmail interface).

I can't imagine my employer deciding to allow company e-mail to be
dependent on some detached 3rd-party for the server software, the
hosting of the physical servers and related elements. (Many other
companies, I'm sure, have no major concerns.)
