How long can you run WinXP without "activation"? I use XP at the

Like Rick said, I expected 30 days. But no such luck; I couldn't login at
all until I reactivated XP. Don't know if that's specifically an OEM thing
or what.

(First, apologies to the list for the earlier subject FUBAR.)

This might be the messy part -- a "new" activation could easily be
handled different from attempting re-activation. Of course, it's
possible that "re-activation" happens more often in emergency
situations where you /had/ a working system and needed to replace a
critical, significant component... such as... oh, I don't know... a
MOTHERBOARD???

So, you're working along for months, a mobo gets cracked, you spend
who knows how much time/effort getting things back, and you can't
start the blasted thing back up!

Sure, buy it all new and take your time. But when you need some
quick response, -- "Sorry!"

Am I getting the hang of it?

And I see later comments that discuss CDs tied to manufacturers... those make some sense (having worked a couple years for one of those manufacturers).
