Jim,

If you select the View menu, you should see a listing for "Status Bar".  If
it is not checked, left click and it should display.

I know that if you select the "Toolbars" option from the View menu, you can
select "Lock the Toolbars", but I don't know if this pertains to the Status
Bar or not.  You may just be the victim of a random click, or some rogue web
page may be reconfiguring some of your browser options.
