I think I'll extend my boycott of California Software products to ASNA.
While I'm all for alternative programming environments I struggle with a
number of inaccurate statements being made within the Midrange Alliance.

I'll repeat my position that with the i5 and the standard or value
license
the iSeries is not the most expensive system and when you add all the
manpower issues around MS 2003 server, SQL server, disk storage, etc.
it
is the most affordable system. Assuming you are a small, medium, or
large
customer running an enterprise environment it is improper to assume that
the iSeries is more expensive.

Now, with IBM's pricing charge of the 5250 tax it is possible to save
money
with a Wintel solution.......

1.) I think IBM needs to revisit it's licensing practices - including
hardware maintenance......why give anyone an opening like that......?

2.) I think IBM needs to respond aggressively to this garbage......

Do you think Mark Shearer is listening to this stuff?

Their pricing is perfectly aligned with the direction they are going.
They want you to go Java and Websphere, and what better way to do that
than to keep interactive pricing high. We are pricing out two new i5
boxes of medium size, and being that our new software development
approach is not using 5250 we can practically cut out the interactive
charge. THIS CUTS THE PRICE OF THE BOX AND SOFTWARE IN HALF!!

MSDN License. I am not a .NET developer so I didn't know what else to
call them except for "plugins" :-P Sorry for the confusion. I have
only seen the numbers and have a small understanding of what is
included. All I know is that when we did a couple of Java projects, we
didn't have to buy anything for our developers unless we felt EJB's were
in order.

Wow, what did you do, buy an MSDN Universal license for each developer?

That get's you the developer tools, yes (the enterprise versions even),
but it also gets you every OS (workstation and server), every Office
version, Visio, all the servers (SQL, Exchange, Content, Speech, SMS,
etc.), the applications (Navision, Great Plains, etc.) and a bunch of
other stuff. Basically you get everything MS makes that doesn't come
from the entertainment side of the business (no games <FROWN>).

Keep in mind, .NET itself is FREE! You can download the runtime and the
SDK including compilers from MS for free. If you want a decent IDE you
can get one of those for free too (see WebMatrix) -- and I'd be
surprised if someone hasn't built a .NET view for Eclipse.

A "standard" developer would want to run VS.NET Professional, which
IIRC, costs ~600.

Oh, and if you did buy each one an MSDN license I hope you bought their
PCs withOUT an operating system or office, since the MSDN license allows
you to run the OS and Office.
