A three minute silence was held across the country this morning at eleven
o'clock local time. Flags on public buildings are at half mast.

Between four and five hundred Britons are thought to be among the missing
at the WTC.

For the first time in its history NATO has invoked a clause in its charter,
declaring that an attack on any single member nation of the alliance is an
attack on all.

Many Americans in the crowd outside Buckingham Palace were visibly moved
yesterday when the band of the Coldstream Guards played the Star Spangled
Banner in an unprecedented alteration to the changing of the guard ceremony
personally ordered by the queen.  During the ensuing two minute silence the
Duke of York, representing his mother, stood shoulder to shoulder with the
US ambassador, William Farish. Her Majesty later returned from Balmoral to
be able to attend a special memorial service today.
