Actually, Alexei is exactly correct. Windows was simply a GUI task running
under DOS. Now, it is the name of the new operating system that is written to
replace DOS. But that doesn't make the GUI part of the OS. It still is a task
and could be kept seperate just like it is done with *nix or OS/2.

I remember when that was a fairly common description of Windows (2.0 I think)
"A Graphic menu system for DOS."
