Marc:

The BMC is still that (actually a super micro device anyway) and while you can power off/on the hardware if needed it really does not have any effect on the HMC application that runs on the hardware.

Having a local session for the console open on the HMC itself is always a good thing and does protect against communication errors, although IBM i is fairly tolerant of those too.

In general I encourage everyone to turn Allow Console Takeover on. And, if
you're also using a HMC to also always use a shared console and never a
dedicated console. Both eliminate the worry of a session dropping right
while you are in the middle of a long running process (system save,
upgrade, initializing disks, etc).

We had a couple of issues in the past with two remote shared consoles loosing communication with the service tools at the same time. So, we were also used to start a shared session from the HMC itself.

I believe that you are using vHMC and I don't know if it is possible to get remote full control to the vHMC (I guess it is, thanks to VMWare capabilities). On a Power based HMC, if you set the BMC (still this name?) port up, you can act just like if you were sitting near to the device. Useful as well when updating/upgrading the HMC.
