Not sure if you have used any open source software, but the PASE-base curl utility might be useful.

Run a curl command and then deal with the results.

Other alternatives include using Python, Node or PHP.

Otherwise sticking with HTTPAPI is probably fine as long as it's been working for you.

YAJL can be using in RPG to parse the JSON. Seems to work well.
