I just googled for CERN and AS/400 - found a presentation to the Toronto
User Group from Fall of 2002 (
https://www.tug.ca/Fall2002_TUG_Apache101.pdf) with this on one of the
slides -
* AS/400 shipped its first HTTP server in V3R7
* Product is: 5769-DG1 HTTP Server for iSeries
* Ships with OS/400, but does not come installed
* Based on CERN implementation
* HTTP Server for iSeries (Powered by Apache) debut Dec 15,
2000 on V4R5 via PTF
* Packaged as part of same product
* 2 HTTP servers in one product: Original and Powered by
Apache
* They can coexist on the same iSeries system
* Based on Apache 2.0 (alpha version)
* First platform to support Apache 2.0!!
The QATMHTTP* tables in QUSRSYS were for the Original server, QATMHINST*
for Apache
I also believe NET.DATA could produce output for an HTTP server - please
excuse any invalidity in that statement! Is NET.DATA still usable?
Ah, sweet memories!
Cheers

Yes, data-uris for images have been viable since about 2010. (2006 forFirefox, 2009 for IE, 2010 for Chrome)
Oh! I thought they appeared earlier. I admit, I did't do much historical
research on that sub-topic.
However, I thought your main thrust in this thread was to discuss whatyou might do before the IFS was added to the IBM i (which was around
1994.) So I'm not sure that data uris make sense, here... sure you can
use them to avoid the IFS now, but not historically...
Thanks for clarifying! Yes, you're completely right.
Honestly, I don't think too many people ever served a web site on IBM iback then.
This is also my suspicion, but I don't have proof.
I suspect that pretty much anyone who did that would've used DLO forimage files.
Yuck! ;-)
Likewise, you could ue something like a USRSPC to store image data in alibrary... but it would've been awkward to administer, because in order to
add/replace pictures on your site, you'd need someone with the technical
know-how to convert those pictures into user spaces, et al.
Yeah, that sounds doable, yet pretty much out of question.
Frankly, though... I didn't know anyone doing that sort of thing backthen, it just wasn't a common need!
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't assuming a common need. Just passed on word
of mouth (aka, mail in this case) and trying to to get more input.
People hosting HTTP servers weren't as commonplace, the TCP/IP supportwas limited, support for things like stream files was somewhat limited,
etc. It just didn't happen.
Well, did *not* or did *rarely* happen? :-) In any case, I see there were
quite some obstacles. I'm currently reading again through the "Cool Title
About the AS/400 and Internet", moaning about Gopher software for OS/400
probably being lost forever, and getting new overall insights: I've learned
quite a lot about the platform since reading through it the first time some
years ago.
Anyway, thanks for your valuable comments! Well appreciated!
