OP stated, "same subnet". Firewall possible but unlikely.

And, he also wrote "As for subnet – both machines are on the same rack and connected to the same comms hardware.". In the initial post, he is also talking about a VPN, but my understanding is that this VPN is between his PC and the servers. So, I am quite sure that there is a direct connection through the same switch. But, only Åke can confirm.
