Hello hello
I think this is the first time I’ve ever posted on this list. I tried to
post over on WDSC but no luck.
As Code for IBM i approaches 2500 downloads, I wanted to share something
else here.
Of course, I see VS Code as the future of development for any platform -
not just IBM i. I wanted to make it clear that it is possible for other
developers to write their own extensions that use Code for IBM i for the
connection to the users system.
For example, a vendor might want to write some code to create a view or
webview within the extension. They can use Code for IBM i APIs in their
extension to execute commands, run SQL statements, among other things.
While the project is open-source, I encourage everyone to have a go at
writing JavaScript or TypeScript. Writing an extension is a nice way to
start that. Brian Garland recently released his own extension called
vscode-rpgfree. You can highlight some fixed format RPG and a couple of
clicks later it becomes free format. It’s awesome.
Also, we’re mighty close to releasing a version with source date support -
of course, this has been a major road block for some in the past.
Have a great week!
