We had a few old midrange boxes, and we did follow the same procedure that
Rob recommended below. However, we also took the drives to a local machine
shop and had the guy drill holes in all (63) of them. (I inherited the
previous collection of "death row" disks, but they were taking up too much
real estate in the office). The machinist didn't expect the drives to put up
much of a fight, and he ended up breaking two of his best bits before he
moved on to his carbide bits. The guy charged me $2.50 per hole. Fun story
to share around the Midrange campfire while maintaining 6 feet of separation
from my nearest Midrange buddy.
