Any particular reason you wouldn't go 7.4?

Future planning isn't a bad thing [Getting ready for the (far?) future],
especially if there is the possibility of future growth.

We are currently running with V7R1 on 2 x Power 7's (1 Live, 1 DR), both
of which are at end of life.
Our plan is to upgrade to V7R3 on 2 x Power 9's, in the very near
future.

So, they shell out big $$ for new hardware to get lower ? yearly
maintenance? As far as I know my power 8 is still under maintenance.. I
did SWMA renewal a few months back and hardware just a couple months
ago.

I guess since I'm mainly a programmer I don't follow the hardware things
that much.

hopefully that won't be for a few years. Even my old 515 still has
enough
horsepower for most of the things I need it for.

Once we moved to our current box (which I believe is a POWER7+, and
definitely at the lowest possible tier) several years ago, we have
been unable to throw anything at it which makes it break a sweat. If
your business is growing so fast that you actually need to upgrade for
performance reasons, that is a great, great problem for your business
to have. I think the vast majority of IBM midrange shops out there are
only upgrading at this point for maintenance and support reasons.
