We had to get a quote on a license for the vHMC when we were considering it for our new box. As I recall it was more expensive than the software to run on the 7063, but both the initial cost and the ongoing cost was less than having the physical HMC.

Still wondering:
1 - Is there any cost for licensing vHMC? Or is it a free download? When you call in support and they ask your serial number what do you tell them?
2 - I am hoping that networking is not such an issue. While we have some vlan's I do not believe we have a separate one for just ASMI and HMC. I could get to ASMI from any PC in our network.
3 - I never physically connect a keyboard to the HMC. It's just more convenient and ergonomic to connect into the KVM via the lan. Our KVM's are rather high end and I believe they will support multiple users (at least to different end points). Therefore there shouldn't be a KVM fight over use during a disaster.
4 - Same KVM controls the VMware box.
5 - I plan on having redundant HMC's on different VMware boxes GR data center will backup for our other DC and vice versa.

Am I reading this right?
V9R1M9xx versions of HMC code go out of service 2020-03-31?
And the follow on release will not run on our two 7042-CR8?
Leaving us the options of:
- Standalone Power system for HMC, like the 7063-CR1?
- Creating HMC lpar on existing Power systems?
- virtualized HMC (vHMC) image in either the VMware, KVM or Xen hypervisors on your own x86 hardware

This is a rapidly approaching budget decision.

I've been tasked to test deploying the last option, at least as a backup HMC(s) for our existing two HMC's which control our two P9's and our one P8.

What are the licensing arrangements for the vHMC option?
Any "how to" instructions for installing vHMC?

Rob, this article outlines a version that will not run on x86.

What's the timeline for the End of Support for the x86 based HMC's?
One of my first concerns is when will there be the first firmware
release for Power 8, 9 (or above) which requires a level of HMC code
higher than that which will run on x86 based HMC's?
