Don, you won't get a path failure to call home. It might be that you
updated a VIOS or an FC switch in that path or it might be a real failure.
But you CAN configure the HMC to let you know of those messages. AFAIK IBM
i is kind of iffy on reporting the errors to the HMC, but you can monitor
for those and send them to yourself.
