Cool.
It's taken me a couple years, but I'm starting to get comfortable with Linux.
Virtual Box and VMware are golden in terms of testing.
If you need any prebuilt VMs, the following sites are cool:
https://www.osboxes.org/
https://www.turnkeylinux.org/
https://virtualboxes.org/images/
https://bitnami.com
With your Java background, that should work on your VMs or you can of course use any of the language variants include C# now as well 😊
Rsync or other app sync tools should work for moving site files between VMs.
Are you also planning to replicate local databases (MySql/Postgres/Other DB??) as well or will you interact directly with IBMi or whatever other platforms you have ? If planning to replicate database stuff I'm curious what you plan to use for that.
Feel free to ask questions and post here as you progress or feel free to reach out if you want to brainstorm any architecture stuff.
Having your own Linux appliance can be a nice way to have pre-boxed functionality at the ready.
Fun times !!

Hi Richard!
My immediate goal is to have a standalone Linux machine that I can manage myself.? With VirtualBox, I can try things and not have to take anyone's word for anything.? It's a much less intrusive and more flexible option than building an actual box or creating a Linux partition.
The longer term goal is to create an appliance that can act as a web portal to an enterprise server.? I'd like to build what would in effect be a self-replicating set of servers, any one of which can act as a front end for basic information even if the primary server is down.?
Activity on any one would be replicated to all the others, with an option for a master to pull all activity and archive it.? A new appliance could register itself and pull the current data from the other servers.
Any similarities to systems or applications past or current are entirely coincidental.

Hey Joe,
Can you tell us a little more detail about the use case ?
Inquiring minds....
