Now suppose user JSMITH, who is not authorized to see the field at all,
changes a record in the file, and user JDOE, who is authorized to see
partially redacted contents, each change a record. In neither case do
they enter a new value for the field that has the FieldProc on it.
Nothing - the same encoded value is retained. What happens to the value of that field?
the new values will be accepted as clear text value, encoded, and stored inAnd what happens to it if they DO enter new values for it?
Good questions James. I believe I understand what you are asking.
If the column is SSN and JSMITH (or JDOE) reads the row and does an RPG
update, what is written to that column value? Assuming that they are not
using O specs and only writing out specific columns. Or using an SQL
update and specifying columns other than this one.
JSMITH sees *****1234
He does an update, what is written to that column?
I've done a bit of searching and cannot find the documentation you are
looking for. Experimentation may be fun and informative but I cannot
guarantee that it will be accurate.

Subject: Another FieldProc question
Sent by: "MIDRANGE-L" <midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx>
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Suppose a file has a FieldProc (we'll assume, for now, that it's from
Crypto Complete) on a field. And suppose some users are authorized to
see the complete field contents, others are authorized to see partially
redacted field contents, and others are not authorized to see the field
at all.
Let's also assume that the FieldProc is not some total botch job.
Now suppose user JSMITH, who is not authorized to see the field at all,
changes a record in the file, and user JDOE, who is authorized to see
partially redacted contents, each change a record. In neither case do
they enter a new value for the field that has the FieldProc on it.
What happens to the value of that field?
And what happens to it if they DO enter new values for it?
