Having the Load Source as well as all data storage external to the IBM/i hardware has minimal impact on iSeries functionality. I'm sure there's some overhead because the data storage isn't 'right down the bus' from the processor, but the system is fast enough to hide the extra overhead.

Hence, from the 'green screen' point of view, the iSeries looks the same. And the IFS. And communications. &c.
