All very good advice and true. I would just reinforce what Rob mentions about checking with any 3rd party or vendor software.....Sometimes the business really depends on some of those solutions and with upgrades come changes to the version of the software you may need, or new license keys, or even a cost. Better have that on your checklist..

Thanks, Larry

You need to read each and every one of Paul's links. Including the 7.2 Memo to Users even if you are skipping that. The reason being that some things which die, or change drastically, with 7.2 aren't repeated in the
7.3 MTU.
Other links have been or will be suggested. Most of those are links that will be included in the one's that Paul gave. Here's another one you will get if you drill down far enough
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1022023

Some of the trickier stuff is you will be directed to links to determine if your particular Power server supports 7.2 and 7.3. The tricky part is even if your server supports a higher release to ensure that you are not running any cards and other devices which aren't supported. 7.2 was the big one. Since you are going to 7.3 you will be better off. 7.2 had a few models which would work but practically none of the cards would go.
7.3 did a better job of just killing off that whole model.

And it's always good to check with any vendor supplied software that you have a version capable of running on a newer version of IBM i.

One big thing when reading the MTU is that when they say something do not discard it as "they can't mean that, instead I choose to interpret it as ...". Feel free to double check with us on this list.

You will need at least the three links below.

V7R3 Memo to USers
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzaq9/rzaq9.pdf?view=kc

V7R2 Memo to users
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/rzaq9/rzaq9printme.htm

Installing, upgrading, or deleting IBM i and related software
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzahc/rzahc1.htm

How long depends on many variables.
If need to limit your down window, consider building a combined V7R3 OS /
PTF image.

I just finished the entire process, multiple LPARS.
