The 520 from the OP is a 9406-520 as I recall and that one dead ends at i 7.1.

As to the 'new cheaper than maintenance' yes fairly common as the maintenance rates on the 9406s are climbing. Tho early 15K Drives in the
9406 machines by now are at or approaching 100,000,000,000 rotations.
They're getting dizzy!

This is one of the arguments that the boss is always throwing at me: it doesn't matter how old the box is, it doesn't have any moving parts. Every time I argue back that yes it does, the disks are always spinning. As well as the heat being generated is constantly wearing down the internals.

Problem is, we just haven't had that many problems with it. It's the curse of rock-solid reliability. The worse thing we ever had happen was we lost the backplane once, which is bad. But IBM flew the part in overnight and we were only down for less than a day.
