To Charles' point - for temporal support you add a couple columns to the main table - AND you have an additional table - the historical table - with the same format as the main one - hence the extra space in any case - so it is not only the extra columns.

Now for those of us who have already implemented some kind of history, this could be about the same usage, just that the system automatically manages more of it.
