Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions.
I ended up breaking out an old XP laptop with FireFox that could still
connect with my VPN, loading up Java,
and (most importantly) adding the tape drive's URL to the Java Exception
Site List.

The issue is that the 2900 is using a self-signed certificate, and Java
thinks that's a Bad Idea. Which it is, but changing horses while we're
swimming across the bay isn't my idea of a good time.
