What would the equivalent P8 requirements be?
What would the equivalent P9 requirements be?

You almost NEVER need additional processors for such partitions. Since the

Memory, maybe but again since workload is often transferred this may be
needed here. Unless you actually have to license another core you send the
i5/OS hasn't been marketed for a decade and even IBM i Licenses are not

Like Jim said in the first place it's mostly storage and a base partition

I would have thought by now we would have gotten this point across!!

I see virtual test partitions in the future......
Never fails to happen. It's easy fast and as long as you have the
the HMC even if you only have one partition to start. Take my word for it,cheap.

Thanks Jim,
I have been debating on if we should to get one or not.
At THIS point it would be just a single LPAR. But the future, who knows.
I have proposed enough DASD (SSD drives and RAM) to make it possible.

Then there is a NEW CONSOLE in your very near future. I highly recommend
new power 8's to replace old power 5's.

One concern I would have is the HMC. IF you are using an HMC, there
is no version that will run both a power 5 and a power 8 or above.
The HMC running Version 7 will handle a power 5 through 7 but not the
power 8. An HMC running version 8 will not communicate with a power
5. :(
Just a heads up. My business partner totally missed that when sell me
there are ways to get you on to the new box (at V7Rx) without too much

We have LTO 3's.
Going to LTO 5 will read them, just not write to them.
Yep, being at 7.1 handcuffs us a bit.

Try this line:
If you're open to going to going to at least 7.2 they could save a few
and more).Unless you just want to growth of the S814 instead (multi lpar capability
on your 525? Like, how are you going to migrate from that?
Of course your 525 won't support anything higher than 7.1

Then again, does any newer hardware support the tape drive you're using
and both with a new TR announced but not coming out until after our MarchBTW, just what tape drive are you using?

Well, 7.1 is a show stopper for the new S812. That requires 7.2 or 7.3,
months (or longer).

Oh yea, that's like going from a Yugo to a Ferrari. The 525 is (was) a
the mustard for you.box, but it's Power5 and such. Even a 4 way would be a massive upgrade
in
power.

Hi All,
Several months ago I put together a proposal to replace our i5 box
(9406-525) with a new shinny Power 8.
This proposal is going to be pushed again.
Does anyone know when the Power 9 box/config are going to be announced?
The config/pricing of a Power 9 will be different than the Power 8.
Thanks!!!!
