Two ways to configure the internal DNS servers, 1. Recursive - but not PCI compliant or 2. use forwarders. You the ones your ISP gave you as forwarders on your internal DNS server.
For internal, you should have at least one for each subnet within your organization. If you have only 1 subnet then you should have DNS servers on that subnet.

FYI: I had no plan to remove the internal.
1) If internal only, how would you find anything external? I assume you're
going to say the internal DNS being used on turn uses external DNS servers,
which it does.
2) If internal only and you're a small company with only a single internal
DNS server, and it goes down, aren't you then stuck?
