When you stay on a release not only do you stay after IBM first drops
support, but you stay until IBM even drops the extended support coverage.
I think they've gotten a little better with this extended support but
didn't it used to be "we'll gladly take your check but we'll only fix
issues we already have PTF's for, don't expect us to gen a ptf for you to
fix a new issue"?

If they offer a three year extension to 7.1 like they did to V5R4 you
should be able to stay on 7.1 for at least 4 more years.
