Woah now. I've been using the supposedly decrepit utility in iSeries
Navigator to convert print images to page segments. I told everybody that
there was a green screen alternative if they ever finally took Navigator
away from us. Was I wrong? How do you create page segments of images
without STRAFPU or Navigator's AFP Manager?
We're on i7.3, and indeed, STRAFPU is gone.

IBM Advanced Function Printing Utilities (5770-AF1)
Doesn't have anything to do with AFPDS printing, that would be 5770-SS1
option 36/37/38 PSF for IBM i
Dropping support of AF1 doesn't change what can be printed.
AF1 is a collection of utilities :D used to create AFP resources

Convert Overlay to PFM (CVTOVLPFM) command
Convert Page Segment to PFM (CVTPAGSPFM) command
Convert PC Document to Page Segment (CVTPCDPAGS) command

Print PFD Data (PRTPFDDTA) command
Start Advanced Function Printer Utilities (STRAFPU) command
Start Overlay Utility (STROVLU) command
Start Print Format Utility (STRPFU) command
The only one I've every used is the Overlay utility. You can build an AFP
overlay using the green screen.
I used it 20 years ago and today since it allows for exact spacing ( I was
doing 8lpi with shading every other line) and cheap compared to the PC
based alternatives.

I took it as "we don't support it any more, but it should still work."
This does sound very similar to what my customer was told... IBM directed
them to other companies. He was asking me if my software worked with
barcodes and I told him I'd update my software so it does (so I did!).

Do you have a simple test? Like a printer file and a simplified RPG

I have numerous 7.3 lpars.
