Perhaps a better solution would be to change the QNTC file system to use Samba under the covers. That way they could just update Samba periodically to keep up with the changes to the SMB/CIFS protocol.

Right now you're asking them to more or less rewrite QNTC to a newer standard of SMB/CIFS.
