Actually, I don't think announcing of any release can be directly tied to
announcing of end of support for any previous release. In fact, I can't
even find a loose relationship.

I think they dropped support for 6.1 because one, it was old, and two,
they are dropping support for JDK 6 after 7.2. The highest jdk that 6.1
could run is 6.
IBM promises to give you 12 months notice before end of support for any
