openquery is the recommended method, and this is why:
Let's say you have a table with 2 billion rows.
Let's say you do a select which returns 100 rows.
without that openquery it will do all the processing locally. This means
it will download all 2 billion rows, select and sort them there.
With the openquery it does the selection on the server and only returns
the selected rows. I've seen this shave a LOT of time off of the
processing, cutting it down to a miniscule fraction of the original time.

Try a space between CURRENT and DATE.
