Someone there created it. You could have just as easily used
SYSIBM/SYSDUMMY1 as the name of the remote file.
They only created it because they didn't think about using
SYSIBM/SYSDUMMY1 (which is on every system).
You have to have some file, any physical (maybe logical also) file, on the
CRTDDMF in order to use that DDMF in SBMRMTCMD.

On an lpar named DOMTEST I did a WRKOBJ *ALL/DOMTEST. There are no files
named after my lpar.

DDM can also be used for RPG RLA (not SQL) access.
If you're sql phobic you can create a ddm file to point to a file on
another system and read from that and write to a local file. Or vice
versa.
