I'm looking at a print manual, I think - http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r2/ic2924/books/c415713531.htm

There is a font width listed for several of the FNTCHRSET names - in various places - and that width is how many 1/1440ths wide a blank is - which MIGHT be kind of an average.

I thought there as something in the font resources that defined each characters width - has to be so that the successive characters are spaced properly.
