Gad,

You need to decide if this is a quick refacing project, or a longer
re-development project, or a combination (quick reface to get an immediate
return, followed by the longer development).

I'll put a plug in for Websmart (BCD Software), which has a tool with its
own simple scripting language that generates RPGLE or PHP (I've used the
RPGLE version for many years).

I did a comparison of Websmart and Profound couple years ago for current
employer - each had good points and each was a slightly different skillset
or technology requirement set (between RPGLE-CGI, PHP, Java). Each can
produce very capable modern applications.

Whatever products you are going to compare, I would suggest you take a
working application (multiple screens, screen types (single display file,
multiple panels, popup windows, complex subfiles) and work through how to
achieve a working web app. Also don't forget about the whole menu system,
and how you would stage your applications (portal or similar). You don't
have to actually build everything in this demo, but do go for the harder
stuff - it's eye opening as to limitations a tool might have. I took 4 weeks
of solid time to work some apps this way, and I have been a Websmart coder
before, and a Synon coder way back.

If your current code is not "modular", where routines are not encapsulated,
but repeated all around the code, and often in slight variations, you could
be cleaning a lot of that up to make your future system more gui front and
business logic in the back end (callable). Also, if you are not into sql,
start training and implementing it within RPGLE and CLLE.

Have no idea what software or apps you have so take this all as general
suggestions.

Subject: cost estimate for a GUI pilot

Hello pundits

I'm to come up with cost estimate for a GUI (modern?) interface tool for
next year budget .

I know there are several commercial tools around but I find it hard to
compare them (i.e is Profound UI's method preferable to ASNA's)

We are a small RPG/Java shop (4 RPG programmers 3 Java) but we do not
intermix.

My immediate concern is to set a budget for the pilot project but I have to
decide on the right course first.

I would greatly appreciate your advice regarding the tools, methods, costs
etc.

Thanks
Gad
