Along this line of thinking, those tape drives on Power5 protrude RIGHT
up to and against the fan bracket. If the fans were extricated or
installed while the tape drive was in there it would be possible for the
bracket to skew the SCSI connector to the tape drive I believe.
Certainly next time you have the power off on this thing I would verify
all the connections to the tape drive. Also be sure the terminator block
is the the SCSI cable from the control panel backplane to the drive.
Easiest way to do this by the way is to pull the power cords and slip
the entire control panel assembly out the front of the machine. This
puts it right in your hand.
Not sure if it's IBM official procedure or not but if there is an
internal tape drive in a Power5 520 or 525 CEC I always pull the front
panel assembly forward 1/2 to 1 Inch first. Next I install the fans.
Once they are buttoned down then re-insert the front panel assembly and
finally plug up the power.

IBM does look at the number of people who order a PTF. If there's a PTF
that's only been ordered once by one person it may never make it on a
cume. The thought process being that if more people order it and it
drives?doesn't smoke their system then maybe they should release it on a cume.
IDK but I though Hiper's worked differently.

My V7R1 2/25 semi -weekly group PTF order brought down MF58124.
On my V6R1M1 LPAR, the similar group PTF order did not bring down
thatI had to order this PTF individually.
Any ideas why the difference?

There just ain't no way IBM is going to issue new PTF's for 6.1.0 of

2) I don't get any of those source reference codes

Jim,
We've had our share of catastrophic failures, back in the S/38
3370 days, (no Raid protection) one year we had 3, it was a
perfect diagonal on the
12 month calendar. Then in the AS/400 years when a 3rd party
vendor doubled your disk capacity if you swapped your IBM memory
and controllers for theirs. Over time not very reliable.
Yes, we've been lucky in the last 10 years. Failures will occur,
but hopefully not as catastrophic with all the newer built in
fail?
We have SSD drives on our new P7-740. Has anyone had a SSD drive
10/8/11.

I'm happy Holger's systems are holding up, it proves the hardware
