Beginning with Release 6.1 it is possible to include ORDER BYs into the
Sub-Selects. But IMHO it does not guarantee that final result is returned in
this sequence.
In this way you may add additional sort columns into the sub-selects and add
a final Order by based on this sort keys.

Example:

Select a.*, 1 SortFile, Row_Number() Over(Order By Key1, Key2, ... KeyN)
SortKey
From YourTable1 a
...
Union
Select b.*, 2 , RRN(b),
From YourTable2 b
....
Select c.*, 3, RRN(C)
From YourTable3 c
....
Order By SortFile, SortKey

Betreff: SQL UNION and ORDER BY

I would like to have a

SELECT with an ORDER BY

And UNION this to another SELECT without an order by.

Is this possible?

It seems that SQL requires the ORDER BY to sort the entire result file.

Thanks

select fieldnames
FROM fileA

ORDER BY field1, field2

UNION all

SELECT
More field names
FROM from
