FTP will always give better results than SMB due to protocol overhead.
on a WAN line, you should play around with CHGTCPA TCPRCVBUF() TCPSNDBUF() parameters.
Usually 8192 is set which might not give best results. Depending on the number and
type of routers on the way, 65536 or 131072 will give better results. Try with an
average size and different parameters, CHGTCPA can be used on the fly.
Also parameter ECN(*YES) can be of help.

As others suggested, a compression also can save time. Use ajar command in QSH to create a zip file.
