Just a side comment, more appropriate for the RPG400-L perhaps...

If Packed Decimal is the desired type, why not explicitly declare them as such, if only to be absolutely clear? The following is unambiguous, as contrasted with the contextual-based typing effected by the RPG compiler for the above declarative:
