Concurrent maintenance on disk units has been available since before the "black boxes" that were introduced in 1995.

If I remember correctly, it came about with V2R3 of OS/400. Unfortunately, it took almost 10 years before most CEs were willing to actually do concurrent maintenance on disk units.
