Let me ask the obvious question here. Unless you are worried about wearing out the disk arms - why do you care? Surely it is the amount of time it is taking that matters and not an arbitrary count that as you've already discovered doesn't count what you thought it did.
If we knew what you were trying to determine we could probably make better suggestions.
