There's a free sftp client that you can download at www.arpeggiosoftware.com. It's a native IBM i product (no pase) that's CL command driven so you can write scripts that integrate with your current processes. It's got everything you need to build anything from a simple script to complex file management. It supports userid/password as well as key authentication and has a built in key manager. It's based on openssh. There's a tech tip write up in MC Press here: http://www.mcpressonline.com/document-management/techtip-get-secure-ftp-for-free.html.

I've been looking for a simple way to automate sftp on the System i. On
linux I can use the expect tool which works perfectly. If this was
regular ftp I have simple ways of automating the login process, but sftp
does not work the same way. The sftp server will not allow me to store my
public key there so I can't use key authentication. sftp does support a
batch mode but only when using key authentication. Any suggestions?

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
