Re: IBM i 7.1 Technology Refresh 5 offers performance, usability, and integration enhancements

fixed

As Jim points out you can roll your own. For purposes of an IPL to select the alternative install media you only need a SAVSYS on a DVD. You can get that by simply running a SAVSYS to a DVD-RAM (which takes roughly 1 NFL football game or 1 NASCAR race to complete.) If you don't have a DVD-RAM then you can do this SAVSYS to a virtual optical disk. Then copy that disk image to a PC and burn to physical media with Roxio or what have you. When I do this I have to rename the disk image to a '.iso' file so Roxio thinks it's OK to burn it. You can use DVD-RAM or DVD-R media. IBM recommends avoiding DVD-RW media.

As Larry pointed out it depends on if you can start the system from your
media or not. If you need optical, either A) you build it yourself by
creating you own install media, B) download the latest respin from IBM,
or C) remove any hardware not supported on your current LIC media. (C
is almost never an option)

BRMS is great once the LIC is loaded and the disk are all ready, and the
OS is loaded. Getting all that done your about on your own. Once the
OS is loaded then the BRMS instructions pick up and you complete your
restore.

Just asking, how much change does this amount to if your using BRMS with
all of this.

Jim's right. TR's aren't like V5R4M5 or 6.1.1 where you had to follow
the
infocenter section "Replacing Licensed Internal Code and IBM i of the
same
version and release". Granted, you DO really have to read their
instructions as some of them may throw in an extra IPL or something.

If you got a nice BP I would recommend getting the respin if for no other
reason than to keep it on a shelf in case:
- you decide to spin up a new lpar. This would have the new TR on it.
- in a DR situation you need to boot from disc. Be a bear to have a
brand
spanking new box only to find out your respin is too old to boot that new
box.

No. The TRs now take the place of the re-spin of the BASE DVD. You can
certainly download one if you need it they still build them, but
applying the TR group is sufficient to keep the system up to date.
